Whereas with non-destructive Raw editing you get only one result.Īnother interesting approach is Fuji's "film emulation bracketing" with camera JPEG. Many scenes seem more suitable to one film emulation than another. Admittedly it was only X-T200 and sRGB.Īnother interesting approach is Fuji's "film emulation bracketing" with camera JPEG. My "filmic is overrated" conclusion was reached after achieving approximately equal results with either base curve module, or filmic module. All I want is a pleasing somewhat-natural looking photograph that other people can enjoy. Some of "scene referred workflow" discussions are beyond my pay grade. Whew! I remember that thread, but I must have abandoned it at an early phase. That was also my understanding, but I have not studied this matter deeply either. If I understand correctly, in that thread I think Iliah was less enthusiastic about the "scene-referred" capability of darktable (and whether it is truly scene-referred), but that was from a fairly quick read. I think it was Henry Richardson that posted it in Retouching here: (I have not myself made any use of 'filmic-oriented' processing in DT and do not plan to at this time.) As best I recall, Iliah Borg posted this on another forum: You both may have seen this, which I found interesting WRT filmic vs. I never had any problem with Darktable upgrades, or growing accustomed to new features, although Filmic seems overrated to me. Performance is more than adequate in my Linux Mint VM on W10 even with old hardware (16GB). You could make it work with and two Linux virtual machines.ĭarktable runs best on Linux, but you need a lot of memory for VMs. The later versions of dt have the option to run in the "legacy" modes if you find the new way of doing things problematic. Or it might brick your computer, no idea, sorry It might work if you were to run the second copy on a separate physical disc if possible, or on a separate partition.

I *think* I've seen on that people have been running more than one version of darktable on linux, but on windows? Hmmm. Is it possible to run two versions of darktable at the same time, installed in different directories? These ported *nix programs don't always behave as one expects on Windows. But next time I'll take care and back up the db. It doesn't disturb me very much that my edits are lost. But it's possible I had upgraded after that and removed the installation file and in that could explain why the db backup didn't work.Īnd for the record, if someone else is looking, I found the db files here. I had two installation files on my computer, so I assumed the newest one was what I used. To be honest I'm not totally sure it was 3.0.0 I used before this. I haven't tried to do anything with the program yet, but at least it opens. Well, the first trick, renaming what I think is a backup back to library.db didn't work. The pre-3.4.1.0 one should be the one I used with 3.0.0, right? I'll try renaming that to just library.db and we'll see what happens. Is what you say true even when I now try to use 3.0.0? The db has become corrupted somehow? I didn't see any warning though, but of course I can have missed it. The darktable forum on might be a good place to look for further information/help. Sorry, but I use linux and can't tell you where dt stores the database in windows, so can't help you further. IIRC there is a warning to this effect when you upgrade. If you didn't back up the 3.0.0 database before installing a later version (and thereby upgrading the database automatically during the installation) then, as I understand it, there's no going back without deleting the database and starting again.

But it doesn't show up in the archive either.Ī complete guess: the dt database format has been updated at least once (probably more times) since 3.0.0 and is not backwards compatible. I would expect to get it back to my inbox, but that may differ. I've signed up for darktable's mailing list and tried to ask there. It removed everything from the program directory. I ran the Uninstall.exe belonging to darktable. Doesn't help.Īny idea what can cause this? Some hidden files that need to be deleted? Anything? I'm used to darktable now and want to continue to use it.
#Darktable for windows 10 install
I've tried to uninstall and install again, rebooted, set it to run as admin. No trace of any process running in task manager. It won't run! The terminal window just flickers and immediately closes.

Just checking: by "maunally uninstalled", you mean that you used the normal Windows uninstall capability?Īnd then installed the version I previously had, 3.0.0. Hence I manually uninstalled the new version It ran fine, but I found it confusing and decided to go back to the previous version.
#Darktable for windows 10 upgrade
I decided to upgrade to the latest version and chose the option to uninstall the old version during setup. I've used darktable since a few versions back without problems.
